A350 Chippenham Dualling Project

About The Project

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The A350 Chippenham Bypass experiences significant traffic volumes, resulting in delays and unpredictable travel times for commuters. These issues are exacerbated by projected increases in traffic demand due to planned housing and employment growth within the A350 Growth Zone. The completion of the A350 Chippenham Bypass MRN phases 4 & 5 scheme is integral to Wiltshire Council’s objective of dualling the entirety of the Chippenham Bypass, aligning with previous dualling efforts and junction improvements undertaken between 2014 and 2019.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The A350 Chippenham Dualling project seeks to optimise the functionality of the A350 as a critical transport artery through Wiltshire. By alleviating congestion and enhancing road capacity, the scheme aims to facilitate housing and employment growth while preserving the strategic importance of the A350 Chippenham Bypass within the regional road network.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Based on the issues identified above, and emerging local goals and policies, objectives for the scheme have been identified and the predicted performance of each option against the proposed objective has been assessed.

  1. Reduce the frequency of personal injury collisions along the A350 Chippenham Bypass and parallel routes
  2. Improving journey time reliability on the A350 to preserve its key role as part of the advisory freight route network
  3. Increase the capacity of the A350 Chippenham Bypass to support planned growth (Wiltshire Core Strategy and CSAP) and future growth (emerging Local Plan)
  4. Improve journey time reliability and reduce total delay along the A350 Chippenham Bypass which may otherwise discourage inward investment towards new and existing employment sites in Chippenham
  5. Protect the strategic role of the A350, by increasing the road capacity to improve north-south connectivity and minimise traffic reassigning onto the local road network

Sustainability & Environmental News

Monitoring Air Quality at the A350 Site

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and community wellbeing, MJ Church has partnered with Wiltshire Council to host an air quality monitoring device on the A350 Chippenham Bypass project.

The device is part of Wiltshire Council’s Wiltshire Community Air Network (WCAN) a year-long project to monitor PM2.5 levels across the county. PM2.5 refers to very fine airborne particles that can impact both health and the environment.

The data from the sensor will be captured in real time and made available to the public online, helping to create a detailed local picture of air quality. Insights from the project will support Wiltshire Council’s long-term air quality strategy and help identify ways to reduce pollution in the future.

By hosting the sensor, MJ Church is helping to provide valuable, location-specific evidence while supporting collaborative efforts to protect the environment and improve community health.

Social Value Commitment

Updates on community engagement initiatives and our commitment to positively impacting the local community during the project.

October 2025:

As part of our social value commitment for the A350 project, MJ Church has delivered materials to support the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust in improving accessibility and conservation at Vincients Wood. These materials are being used to create new gravel pathways with wooden edging and membrane, making the woodland safer and more accessible all year round even during wet conditions while helping to protect local wildlife by guiding visitors along designated routes.
Vincients Wood is an integral part of the Chippenham community, providing a vital green space for residents, young people, and volunteer groups. The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust regularly hosts volunteer workshops here, where participants of all ages and backgrounds come together to learn conservation skills, connect with nature, and contribute to the upkeep of this cherished site.
MJ Church is proud to play an ongoing role in this initiative and will continue to donate materials throughout the A350 project, enabling the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to complete all woodland pathways. This collaboration not only enhances accessibility but also supports community engagement, education, and wellbeing ensuring Vincients Wood remains a place for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.
