This project involved the complex major refurbishment of Brookfield Road Bridge which links the villages of Churchdown and Badgeworth, crossing the M5 near Junction 11.
Built in 1970, the bridge was deemed a safety risk to vehicles on the M5 below. Refurbishment work included concrete repairs to the bridge decks, replacing the bridge bearings, removing and reconstructing the parapet beams and safety fencing, waterproofing and entire resurfacing.
This project was particularly challenging as it required a full 12 month closure and lengthy diversion impacting local residents, businesses and schools. The team worked closely with local stakeholders to minimise the impact of the works by diverting site deliveries to the eastern end of the project away from the local school, and also scheduling deliveries to be outside of school drop-off and pick-up times.
The team also conducted two stakeholder days, inviting residents, councillors and MP’s to visit the bridge explain the intricacies of the work, and the proposed 12 month closure.
Conscious of the impact the work had on the local community, the team worked tirelessly throughout to speed up the programme and, drawing on the experience from a previous project at Junction 11 of the M5, successfully completed and re-opened the bridge two months early.
