We are delighted to announce that Max Smith, MJ Church Civil Engineering Apprentice has won Apprentice of the Year at the Chippenham Business Awards.
Max joined the company in 2018 from the MJ Church Civil Engineering Academy at Wiltshire College where he studied for a BTEC level 3 in the Built Environment. He is now studying for a HNC. Max now works with the site teams four days a week and attends college one day a week. He has in the last year worked on major projects in Oxfordshire and Wiltshire; he became a valued member of the team receiving very positive feedback from site and project managers. Max has now extended his experience working in other areas of operations by joining the land surveying team. He has also worked with the communications team talking to the next generation of apprentices at careers fairs in local schools.
Max said, “I wasn’t keen on the A level route, I realised that A levels and full-time university was not me and I decided I wanted to become an apprentice. Since becoming an apprentice last year, I’ve learned how to use specialist equipment to perform surveying and setting out tasks. Not only have I learned how to practically carry out activities which would be required from me in the job but I have been able to apply the knowledge I have learnt at college to the practical work I am doing. For example, I first learnt the basics of CAD at college but since using CAD for work my skills have improved massively and continue to develop. I am currently on my second year of a level 4 HNC in Construction in the Built environment (Civil Engineering). I am hoping to continue my studies at Wiltshire College and University Centre starting an HND in September 2020.”
Congratulation to Max – a very well deserved award.
