Project scope
Tadpole Garden Village is a new residential village development to the north of Swindon for national house builders Crest Nicholson. The development allows for 1,700 residential units, a new primary school and local amenities. MJ Church were employed as main contractor to undertake the site preparation and infrastructure works for the initial phases. The contract included earthworks, installation of an oil pipeline, haul roads, drainage basin, associated drainage systems and site infrastructure.
Project details
MJ Church started works in Oct 2016 preparing the site with major earthworks and the construction a 1km semi permanent haul road creating a main access point for construction traffic. The road will be in place for 5 years until the site is built out.
The MJ Church site team constructed the road complete with passing bays to include a capping layer and sub base using in-house recycled aggregates (6F5 and Type 1) with surfacing works undertaken by an approved MJ Church subcontractor.
The associated work for the road included a land drain, various culverted ditch crossings and existing ditch re-profiling as well as oil main crossings, ducting and construction of a drainage basin.
The construction of the oil pipelines were carried out in conjunction with specialist contractor Promec Engineering Ltd. Promec carried out excavation for the pipeline exposure, tested for durability of the line, laid a sand layer to protect the pipeline and backfilled with materials. MJ Church then installed a reinforced concrete cover which was designed by Crest Nicholson.
Due to good relationships with both client and employers agent and exceeding the client KPI’s MJ Church were awarded additional works increasing the project value from £400,000 to just under a £1,000,000. Additional works included construction and supply of materials for the installation of culverts and pedestrian footpaths, movement of inert materials, installation of drainage systems and a permanent road sweeper tipping facility.
