A350 widening on the Chippenham Bypass completes 5 weeks early

MJ Church have recently completed works for Wiltshire County Council as main contractor on the Chippenham Bypass, widening Bumpers Way and converting the A350 to a dual carriageway at 3 sections to improve traffic flows. Starting in July 2015, the scheme was programmed to complete within 38 weeks and despite minor changes to the design mid-construction and the discovery of a cable which needed relocating, completion was achieved in February 2016 – within 31 weeks. Finishing works 7 weeks ahead of schedule ensured minimal disruption and congestion to the travelling public.

The scheme was carried out from approximately 350m South of the junction with the A420 (at Bumper’s Way roundabout) through to a point 320m North of Brook roundabout, both roundabouts were already built to accept the widening.

Working together with various appointed subcontractors, the contract involved traffic management, site clearance, service diversion, earthworks, drainage & ducting, sub-base, kerbing, planing & surfacing, streetlights including cabling & connections, signage, barriers, parapets & guard rail, concrete stepped barrier, fencing, construction of culvert extension with wing walls, clearance of culverts, bollards, road marking, landscaping and soiling & seeding.

In addition to completing ahead of schedule, MJ Church were able to use approximately 1,500t of locally sourced recycled crushed concrete material from the demolition of various buildings at nearby Wiltshire College. The material was collected by our in-house fleet and used directly on site instead of using primary quarried material, reducing our environmental impact, lorry movements and costs.

Work starts on the A350 widening July 2015

The next phase of work to the Chippenham A350 Bypass to improve the traffic flows planned to start on the 6th July 2015. For the first 12 days investigation, site clearance and preparatory works will take place in readiness for night time closures on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of July.

Traffic management will then be in place with narrow lanes and a 30 mph limit for a length of approximately 1,500 metres starting south of Bumpers Farm roundabout and ending north of Brook roundabout. There will be occasional night works and various lane switches throughout the 36 weeks the works are programmed for. M J Church will work closely with Wiltshire Council to minimise the impact on traffic and yourselves and ask for your cooperation and understanding.

If you would like to see what the work will entail and discuss any aspect with the designers and construction teams, you are invited to a “Drop in” session at Chippenham Rugby Club between 3pm and 7pm on Monday, 6th July where tea and biscuits will be provided.

If you have a question but cannot make it on that day please e mail our public liaison officer on A350enquiry@mjchurch.com
